Summary, etc | This work describes the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive systems with emphasis on important recent advances such as in the hormonal control of the oestrous cycle, artificial insemination, the establishment of pregnancy, embryo loss and its possible prevention. Parturition and lactation, including their manipulation are covered as are factors affecting the post-partum anoestrous period, which is of vital importance in maintaining herd calving intervals and patterns. Common reproductive problems of bulls and cows are reviewed, and the rapidly advancing field of reproductive technology - embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization, embryo sexing and cloning. The book concludes with a discussion of the principles of reproductive management and selection of cattle for breeding. Efficient management of reproduction is essential to maximize the productivity and profitability of cattle farming. The emphasis throughout is on the interaction of the physiology, pharmacology, technology, management and genetics of reproduction to maximize reproductive performance in cattle. Animals used as examples include the zebu and buffalo. |
