1. Comparative Chemoterapy Of Three Coccidiostats On The Naturally Occurring Coccidiosis Inpeafowls At Lahore Zoo

Ninly six samples out of 302 were found positive for the coccidial infection. Out of ninty six infected birds, forty were chosen randomly for medication and divided Into four groups A, II, C and D, each comprising of 10 birds (A treated with Amprolium, B = treated with Maduramicin, C = treated with Suiphaquinoxaline and group D was kept untreated control). Faecal samples of experimental. bir(Is were examined for counting of oocysts per gram of faeces on day "0" (pre-medication) with McMaster technique (Kelly, 1974). Faecal egg counts were again carried out on days 3, 5, 10 and 14 of post-medication and percentage reduction of OPG was calculated. Amprolium showed 53.94%, 70.79%, 84.26% and 93.25% efficacy, while maduramicin with the efficacy of 44.73%, 64.48%, 80.78% and 89.47% and suiphaqulnoxailne showed 57.65%, 77.65%, 85.88% and 97.88% efficacles on days 3, 5, 10 and14, respectively, depending upon the faecal oocysts scores on the respective days. Suiphaquinoxaline was found to be the most effective (97.88%) among the three coccidiostats and amprollum was the second most effective (93.25%). 2. Detection And Chemotherapy Of Balantidium Coli And Its Effect On Hemoglobin In Buffaloes Around Lahore

Balantidiosis manifests as diarrhea, dysentery, severe colic pain, tenesmus, anorexia, nausea and vomiting. The present project was designed to study the detection of Balantidium coli and efficacy of ampicillin, secnidazole and neem seeds against naturally balantidiosis infected buffaloes, around Lahore. In addition, the effect of balantidiosis on hemoglobin was also studied. The present study was conducted on buffalo reared in and around Lahore. For the prevalence, two hundred buffaloes were examined coprologically around Lahore. Out of 200 buffaloes, 40 were found positive, so the prevalence of Balantidium coli in buffalo was 20%. Out of 40 animals, eighteen buffaloes having balantidiosis were selected for chemotherapeutic trials and six untreated infected were also selected and divided into four groups, having six buffaloes in each group viz. A, B, C and D. The animals of group A were treated with ampicillin (inj. Penbritin), at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg body weight intramuscularly for three days, according to the manufacturer instructions. Animals of group B were given secnidazole (Dysen forte), at a dose rate of 1 0mg/kg body weight orally for one day, according to the manufacturer instructions. Animals of group C were treated with Melia Azadarch (Neem), at a dose rate of 200mg/kg of body weight orally for one day. The animals in group D were serving as untreated infected control. Faecal sample were collected and observed at day 0 (pre medication) and at day 3, 7 and 10 (post medication). The efficacy of drugs were analyzed on the basis of disappearance of clinical signs and by reduction of cysts/trophozoites. The data thus obtained was analyzed statistically. Efficacy of ampicillin (in Penbritin) was 16%, 16% and 33% on day 3, 7 and 10 respectively. Efficacy of secnidazole (Dysen forte) was 25%, 66% and 83% on day 3, 7 and 10 respectively. Efficacy of Melia Azadarch (Neem) was 16%, 33% and 50% on day 3, 7 and 10 respectively. Statistical analysis of various groups in respect of therapeutic study showed that group A shows significant mean difference with group B and C, group B shows significant mean difference with group A and D, group C shows significant mean difference with group A and D and group D shows significant mean difference with group B and C. From the results of present study, it has been observed that secnidazole (Dysen forte) was the drug of choice for the treatment of bovine balantidiosis, given at the rate of 10 mg/kg body weight orally. However neem seeds showed better efficacy than that of ampicillin. For hematological studies, the blood was collected from each selected buffalo at day 0 (pre medication) and day 3, 7 and 10 (post medication). The hemoglobin analysis was done by Sahli's Method. The hemoglobin estimation was done on day 3, 7 apd 10 post-medication. The mean values of Hb concentration of group A at day 0, 3, 7 and 10 post-medication were 9.9 ± 0.68, 9.9 ± 0.68, 9.9 ± 0.66 and 10.0 tO.66 measured in g/dI respectively. The mean values of Hb concentration of group B at day 0, 3, 7 and 10 post- medication were 9.4 ± 1.60, 9.4 ± 1.61, 9.5 ± 1.45 and 9.6 ± 1.51 measured in g/dl respectively. The mean values of Hb concentration of group C at day 0, 3, 7 and 10 post- medication were 8.2 ± 0.64, 8.2 ± 0.56, 8.3 ± 0.58 and 8.3 ± 0.53 measured in g/dl respectively. The mean values of Hb concentration at day 0, 3, 7 and 10 post-medication were 8.2 ± 0.80, 8.2 ± 0.80, 8.2 ± 0.82 and 8.2 ± 0.80 measured in g/dl respectively. Statistical analysis of various groups in respect of haematological studies showed that group A shows significant mean difference with group C and D. Group B shows significant mean difference with group C and D. Group C group shows significant mean difference with group A and B. Group D shows significant mean difference with group A and B. It is concluded that at day 0 (pretreatment), the hemoglobin value was normal in group A and B and close to the normal range in group C and D. On day 10 (post treatment), Hb value was increased in groups A, B, C and no change in Hb value of group D. This is due to the treatment of balantidiosis which causes bloody diarrhea with severe haemorrhages. Availability: Items available for loan: UVAS Library [Call number: 0986,T] (1).

3. Post Peak Productive Performance Of Local & Imported Quail Parent Stocks Reared Under Different Lighting Regimes

This study was conducted at Avian Research and Training (ART) Centre, Ferozpur Road Lahore with both local and imported quails maintained under different continuous and intermittent lighting regimes. The experimental quails were subjected to 05 different lighting regimes viz., A (16L: 8D), B (8L: 6D: 2L: 8D), C (8L: 7D: IL: 8D), D (8L :7.5D: 0.5L: 8D) and E (8L: 16D) from 23 -34 weeks of age. The group E (8L: 16D) served as a negative control and group A (16L: 8D) was a positive control, while, the three intermittent lighting regimes used as experimental treatments were named as B, C and D. From 15th to 221I1 week the quails were maintained on a long day lighting schedule of (16L: 8D) in order to create uniformity among birds. The effect of these above mentioned lighting schedules on early productive performance of this flock of quails was examined in another study. In this trial the same act of treatments was used to investigate its lighting effect on post peak production (from 23 to 34 weeks). The experiment was conducted on 240 adult quails (23 weeks old) under factorial arrangements of 5 lighting regimes x 4 purebred strains x 3 replicates having 4 quails (1 male: 3 female) each. The experimental quails were maintained in a 5 tier quail battery (each tier had 6 decks). The study was conducted under the same manage mental conditions. The weekly data on body weight, egg production, FCR (for egg production and egg weight), egg quality traits (egg weight, shell weight, shell thickness, haugh unit and yolk index were recorded. The data thus collected were statistically analysed using analysis of variance technique and comparison of means was made using DMR test. The results of the present study show that mean body weight under light regimes A, B, C, D and E was recorded as 268.81 (+5.09), 280.70 (+12.3), 267.96 (+2.99), 274.10 (+12.3) and 271.20 (+10.3)gm, respectively. A significant (p<0.Ol) effect of light treatments on body weight was observed. The highest body weight (280.70+12.3gm) was recorded under treatment B (8L: 6D: 2L: 8D)which was found to be significantly better than recorded under other treatments, however, A and C and D and E differed non- significantly from each other. Breed differences in body weight were observed to be significant (p<0.Ol). Significantly (p<O.O5) higher body weight was observed in strain M. Body weight between M and K and S and Z strains varied non-significantly. Light and breed interaction was found to be significant (p<O.Ol). The results on feed intake followed almost a similar pattern indicating significant (p<O.Ol) effect of light treatments, breeds and light into breed interaction. However, feed intake under light treatment A (16L: 8D) was more, which varied non-significantly with light treatment D (8L: 7'/2D: '/2L: 8D). The highest feed consumption (p<O.O5) in strain M, which also ranked best in body weight. A non-significant difference in feed intake of M and Z and S and K strains was observed. The mean egg production of quails under lighting regimes A (16L: 8D), B (8L: 6D: 2L: 8D), C (8L: 7D: 1L: 8D), D (8L: 7V2D: V2L: 8D) and E (8L: 16D) during the experimental period was recorded as 79.49, 74.65, 75.99, 76.33, 75.64 percent, respectively. The effect of lighting treatment was found to be significant (p<O.O5) on mean egg production. The birds in positive control group produced significantly (p<O.O5) more eggs when compared with birds on experimental treatments. The results indicated that light treatments of quails during growing period significantly (p<O.Ol) influenced the feed conversion ratio (feed/dozen egg) of quails during post peak production with significant (p<O.Ol) breed and light into breed interaction. FCR of quails of negative control group E (8L: 16D) was significantly (p<O.O5) better than all other light treatments. The strain Z exhibited better (p<O.O5) FCR than the strains M and S, however a non-significant difference between Z and K strains was recorded. A similar trend for FCR (feed/kg eggs) was observed except that Z strain exhibited better FCR than other three strains. The results showed non-significant close bred strain as well as light into breed effect. Breeds differed significantly (p<O.O5) in egg weight and K strain had greater egg weight than the other strains. The results in respect of yolk index and yolk height showed a similar trend. The yolk index in K strain was found to be better (p<O.Ol) than other strains except M strain. The yolk height was observed to be significantly better (p<O.O5) in strain M when compared with S and K strains, however, a non-significant effect between close bred strain M and K was observed. The results showed that quails subjected to different lighting regimes during the experimental period significantly (p<O.Ol) influenced egg shell thickness. The birds on experimental regime B (8L: 6D: 2L: 8D) produced significantly (p<O.O5) thicker shells than other competitive treatments. Breed and light into breed effect was also found to be significant (p<O.O5). Strain Z had the greatest shell thickness than all other strains. The results of the study in respect of other egg quality traits such as Haugh unit, egg shell weight, yolk diameter and albumen height showed non-significant effect ofdifferent lighting regimes applied during experimental period. 4. Body Measurement Parameters As Afunction Of Assessing Body Weight In Lohi Sheep

The objective of the study was to find out or develop the relationship between live body weight and body measurements in Lohi sheep breed. The sheep were arranged in five age groups, groups A, B, C, D, and E. The group A was comprised of 0-6 month of age; group B= 7-12, group; C= 13-18, group D= 19-24 and group E above 24 months age of animals. Group A, B and E were further divided into sub groups (Male & Female), where as the groups C and D comprised of Ewes only. Body weights were taken using weighing scale and measurements of Body weight, Height at Wither, Body Length, Heart Girth, Head Length, Head Width, Ear Length, Ear Width, Neck Length, Neck Width, Rump Length, Rump Width, Barrel Depth, Sacral pelvic Width, Teat Length, Teat Diameter, Testes Length and Testes Circumference with the help of measuring tape graduated with centimeter. Data on 1008 female / 44 male and total of 1052 observations of different age groups of sheep were collected. The mean of all body measurements (cm) and body weight (kg) of Overall Lohi sheep of age group 0-6, was found to be 46.03 ± 11.00 (cm), 45.41 ± 10.24 (cm), 43.79 ± 9.47(cm), 14.75 ± 4.32 (cm), 6.62 ± 1.20 (cm), 23.22 ± 4.73 (cm), 9.46 ± 3.08 (cm), 15.69 ± 5.45 (cm), 10.51 ± 3.56 (cm), 14.83 ± 5.41 (cm), 8.68 ± 2.63 (cm), 26.77 ± 8.15 (cm) and 7.80 ± 4.77 (Kg) respectively. The mean of all body measurements (cm) and body weight (kg) of Overall Lohi sheep of age group 7-12 was found to be 66.70 ± 4.36 (cm), 67.32 ± 4.03 (cm), 66.65 ± 4.84 (cm), 24.80 ± 3.14 (cm), 10.59 ± 1.56 (cm), 30.10 ± 2.34 (cm), 13.64 ± 1.02 (cm), 25.01 ± 2.84 (cm), 15.44 ± 1.88 (cm), 22.43 ± 1.85 (cm), 15.76 ± 1.66 (cm), 36.67 ± 2.50 (cm) and 25.29 ± 3.46 (Kg) respectively. The mean of over all body measurements (cm) and body weight (kg) of Lohi sheep of age group 13-18 was found to be 68.04±3.15 (cm), 68.68±2.73 (cm), 69.77±2.31 (cm), 26.83± 1.87 (cm), 10.86±1.02 (cm), 29.52±2.65 (cm), 14.40±0.97 (cm), 27.13±2.45 (cm), 16.83±2.31 (cm), 23.11±1.92 (cm), 15.05±0.92 (cm), 38.70±1.51 (cm) and 26.60±2.41 (Kg) respectively. The mean of over all body measurements (cm) and body weight (kg) of Lohi sheep of age group 19-24 was found to be 71.88±3.34 (cm), 70.65±3.81 (cm), 72.43±3.90 (cm), 26.87±1.92 (cm), 11.88±1.46 (cm), 30.66±2.68 (cm), 14.42±1.37 (cm), 26.03±2.47 (cm), 16.54±1.67 (cm), 23.95±1.92 (cm), 16.84±1.46 (cm), 38.96±2.43 (cm) and 30.83±3.32 (Kg) respectively. The mean of all body measurements (cm) and body weight (kg) of Overall Lohi sheep of age group above 24 months of age was found to be were 76.30± 5.37 (cm), 77.41±6.74 (cm), 81.63±7.44 (cm), 26.86±2.92 (cm), 12.14±1.60 (cm), 32.65±17.22 (cm), 14.44±1.89 (cm), 26.42±3.47 (cm), 19.28±3.37 (cm), 24.48±2.73 (cm), 19.35±2.53 (cm), 45.43±19.28 (cm) and 42.91±6.54 (Kg) respectively.
