520 _aThe last edition of this guide for the management of poultry under both intensive and extensive systems was published in 1984 but since then many changes have occurred. Significant advances have been made in nutrition and control of disease. Problems of salmonella, campylobacter, listeria and other zoonoses have greatly increased. The industry has adapted to new demands: sections on geese, quail and other poultry are included for the first time and the chapter on turkeys (which are attracting a greater following amongst smaller producers) has been expanded. The pace of change towards "alternative" systems is quickening and the new section deals with these inconsiderably more detail.
