This book gives in-depth coverage of the physiology of fluid, electrolyte, and acid base disorders in dogs and cats. It provides practical information about administration of fluids. Specialized forms of therapy are included. The first half of the book covers physiology, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and treatment. The second half is packed with practical "how-to" information on fluid therapy. Throughout the book tables and algorithms condense key data into easy to access and easy to understand form. Practical how-to's demonstrate accurate placement of catheters and administration of fluids. The book covers specialized forms of therapy including hypertonic saline therapy, blood transfusions, enteral and parenteral nutrition, and peritoneal dialysis. Individual chapters are devoted to fluid therapy in specific clinical situations: shock, anaesthesis and surgery, heart failure, gastrointestinal disease and renal failure. Numerous tables of differential diagnoses and algorithms facilitate the diagnostic evaluation of small animal patients with fluid, electrolyte and acid base disorders. The appendix demonstrates application of material featured in the book to laboratory data.
